Meet the Artist: Tricia Kaman

Updated: Mar 6, 2023

Portraits flow from her paintbrush.

Tricia Kaman has been painting traditional figurative works for over 50 years. She started drawing portraits at Cedar Point Amusement Park and perfected “working from life” on pastel sketches and silhouettes of guests; later becoming the Founder & President of Kaman’s Art Shoppes. She has trained well over 1,000 portrait artists.

She attended Cleveland’s Cooper School of Art, Cleveland Institute of Art, and the Art Students League, New York. Tricia has studied under Nelson Shanks at Studio Incamminati, Philadelphia.

Tricia has exhibited in hundreds of juried regional, national, and international shows including the Grand National Exhibit at the Salmagundi Club in New York City. Her work has shown in group invitationals at NYC’s Agora Gallery and Amsterdam Whitney Gallery. Tricia works mainly with oil and pastels, as she feels that these mediums allow her to embrace the depth and richness that is projected by her subjects.

Currently, Tricia’s studio and gallery is housed in the historic Little Italy of Cleveland, Ohio. It is here where Tricia finds true happiness and tranquility. Whether she is working on a new painting or hosting a workshop for aspiring artists in the area, Tricia finds that her time in the studio is her most cherished. Ever the student as well, Tricia continues to travel the nation, studying with master artists such as Dan Thompson, Nelson Shanks, and Steve Early. Through these workshops, Tricia strives to perfect her technique, bringing back what she has learned and is happy to pass on to others.
